Sho Dozono Receives 2002 Governor's Tourism Award

PORTLAND, OREGON (April 22, 2003) - Governor Ted Kulongoski presented the 2002 Governor's Tourism Award to Sho Dozono, president and CEO of Azumano Travel, on April 15 at the nineteenth annual Oregon Governor's Conference. The conference was held April 13 - 15 at the Chinook Winds Casino and Convention Center in Lincoln Center.

The annual tourism conference provides an opportunity for Oregon tourism-industry professionals to learn about new travel trends and to interact with their colleagues from throughout the state. The conference is supported fully by registration fees, sponsorships and exhibitors.
B The Governor's Tourism Award is one of four awards given annually at the conference by the Oregon Tourism Commission.

In presenting this year's award, Gov. Kulongoski remarked, "This year's recipient is so qualified, so impressive that it's difficult to capture the depth of his service to Oregon over the past quarter century." He went on to say, "Sho's commitment and devotion to the travel industry is evident in everything he does. . .We celebrate and acknowledge Sho Dozono's immense contributions to the growth of Oregon's visitor industry with the 2002 Governor's Tourism Award."

Dozono has a long history supporting the Oregon tourism industry, and his leadership and tireless commitment is legendary. A strong advocate of diversity and equal opportunity, Dozono is committed to championing Oregon as both a travel and tourism destination and a fertile ground for business and investment opportunities. Promoting Oregon to Pacific Rim nations has been Dozono's primary focus for the past 16 years, and his efforts yielded the production of a television series entitled "From Oregon with Love," produced in conjunction with the Fuji Television Network of Japan. The series introduced the state to a large Japanese audience and has generated considerable Japanese interest in travel and tourism to Oregon.

Dozono served as Oregon delegate to the 1995 White House Conference on Tourism and in 1997 was Portland's delegate to the President's Summit on America's Future.

Together with his wife, Loen, Dozono organized and orchestrated the now-famous "Flight For Freedom" that took a thousand Oregonians to New York City in the aftermath of September 11,

More recently, Dozono co-chaired the International Air Service Committee, leading an aggressive marketing campaign that included advance commitments and pledges from local businesses in the form of a "travel bank" to secure non-stop service on Lufthansa German Airlines between Portland and Frankfurt, Germany, which commenced March 31 of this year.

Dozono is a respected business and civic leader throughout the state, devoting much of his time in service to the community. He is Chair Emeritus of the Portland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and a past commissioner of the Port of Portland. Dozono's community volunteer work includes serving on the boards of such distinguished organizations as: Portland Public Schools Foundation; Museum at Warm Springs; Portland Art Museum; Japan America Society of Oregon; National Conference of Christians and Jews, and: Portland Oregon Visitors Association.

The 2002 Governor's Tourism Award is the latest in a series of prestigious honors which Dozono has received. They have included: American Express Great Performers Award; Oregon Association of Minority Entrepreneurs Chairman's Award; Portland's Metropolitan Human Relations Commission Distinguished Service Award Governor's Freedom Award; U.S. Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce Excellence Award in Community Service; SOLV's 2002 Tom McCall Leadership Award; 2002 Oregon Association of Broadcasters Tom McCall Award; ASTA 2002 Travel Agent of the Year Award, and; POVA's Portland Award.
