Sho Dozono Named Travel Agent of the Year

PORTLAND, OREGON (November 4, 2002) - Sho Dozono, president and CEO of Azumano Travel, was named Travel Agent of the Year by the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), it was announced today. The award was presented at the ASTA 2002 World Travel Congress in Honolulu, considered one of the premier annual events of the global travel industry and attended by some 3,000 industry leaders. The ASTA Travel Agent of the Year Award was established in 1970 and is awarded each year during the Society's annual World Travel Congress to the travel agent "who has made the greatest contribution to the travel industry and whose outstanding influence and professional activity have advanced the status of the travel agency industry."

Dozono reportedly is the first Oregonian to receive the honor, awarded in large part for his leadership efforts in helping the travel industry get back on its feet again in the aftermath of September 11. He organized some 1,000 Oregonians and Southwest Washingtonians to participate in the Flight For Freedom to New York, a goodwill mission that brought comfort to those who had suffered great losses and that spurred others to begin traveling again, stopping the free fall the industry experienced in the wake of the terrorist attacks. "I am being honored by my peers for what fellow Oregonians did collectively," said Dozono. "It is with tremendous pride that I accept this award on behalf of my fellow citizens, without whose passion and commitment none of this would have been possible," he added.

The ASTA award follows a string of similar awards Dozono has received this year including the Tom McCall Leadership Award presented on November 1 at the Ninth Annual SOLV Citizenship Awards Banquet "for his years of service to numerous Oregon community and business groups and for his leadership in promoting Oregon's economy and sense of civic pride to national and international audiences"; the 2002 Oregon Association of Broadcasters Tom McCall Award, presented September 28 for "distinguished service to our state and/or to our nation"; the U.S. Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce (USPAACC) Excellence Award in Community Service, presented May 7 to Dozono and seven other Asian Americans around the nation in recognition of "significant contributions to their professions and service to their communities and for improving the quality of American life."
