The summer for me officially began with the Blues Festival over the 4th of July holiday. My 2nd favorite weekend is coming up on Thursday - and I have 3 favorites to keep me busy. First the Country Classic, a horse competition event that brings world class and Olympic bound horses and riders to the Portland area. It's held in the Wilsonville area the same weekend every year. If you have a horse crazy kid or was one yourself, this is a great event with hair raising jumps and amazing riding. See www.thecountryclassic.com for the 4 day event schedule.
Next - and it's one day only on Saturday the 17th - the Portland Highland Games! www.phga.com This year is special, the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band is attending and they are the 6 time WORLD CHAMPIONS! They hail from Vancouver, Canada, and are the featured band who after attending our games head to Scotland to defend their title at the Worlds again. We have one of the best Highland games in the country with a great array of dancers, pipers, athletics, clan tents, food and all sorts of fun for all ages. If your heart stirs at the sound of the pipe or if you just want to see men in kilts, come on down for a great day of culture and fun. It's held at Mt. Hood Community College, parking is free and plentiful at the college. Come early to see the dancers, and be sure to secure a seat in the bleachers or spread a blanket in time to watch the opening ceremonies - if you have a drop of Scottish blood flowing in your veins it's a special day.
Finally in the area where I live which is Columbia County, it's our county fair and rodeo weekend. It's the 95th annual fair, which says just how enthusiastic we are about our county. It's a packed event spread over 4 days with all kinds of great activities. I like the rodeo, the tractor pull, watching the kids and team events in the rodeo arena (milking the wild cows is always a hoot), and after all the events are done the evening heats up some more with a live band and dancing! http://www.columbiacountyfairandrodeo.com/home.html
Whew - I'm going to be tired on Monday!
