Return to the Land of the Pharaohs

by Jason Hedrick on October 18, 2010
Ahlan Wa Sahlan !! Ana ismee Jason....(Hello, my name is Jason) were the first words in Arabic that I had spoken in a very long time. I recently returned to the place that I used to call home. Egypt, Misr, or Land of the Pharaohs is just a few of the many names given to this wondrous place that has become synonymous with ancient history. The only location in the world that still has one of the original seven wonders of the world.

I traveled to Egypt on a travel agent educational trip with Ya'lla Tours to revisit Egypt after a 20-year hiatus. I am not sure if it was the singularly unique aroma, the sounds of the call to prayer from a hundred mosques, or the unending traffic gridlock and incessant blare of car horns that completely rekindled the memories of the Egypt of my past. My experience with Ya'lla Tours began as a journey from Cairo traveling to the Aswan Dam in Upper Egypt ; sailing along the river Nile past the crumbling temples; and culminated with a return to Cairo in  Lower Egypt for the remaining time. It was a whirlwind trip but well worth the visit to many of the highlights that Egypt has to offer.

I found it fascinating to see the differences of the Egypt of present and that which I remember.   I was not disappointed and found new enthusiasm for this ancient land.  Egypt is a much more bustling and hybrid destination now than I remember. Egypt is in the middle of a culture clash and you see it everywhere you look.  From the women who have only their eyes peering out from beneath their clothes to the very modern and chic young Egyptians watching for the latest fads, Egypt is a destination in midst of change.  It is very interesting to see and be a part of it.
