Hurricane Season Predictions

It's official - the season for hurricanes in 2011 is predicted to be interesting. More activity than the previous two years is expected. Where is the hurricane zone? It's not just the Gulf Coast area or the Caribbean. It's a broader area: Mexico, Hawaii, Bermuda, the Atlantic Coast, and the Pacific Coast areas are on the list. Cyclones can occur in Tahiti and Fiji, and the Cooks.
So as a traveler what does that mean to you? First - get travel insurance on any arrangments made to areas where hurricanes can impact your sunny weather expectations. Most package providers offer insurance allowing you to move the vacation to an entirely new destination if the weather prediction is full of rain. That kind of flexibility is worth the cost of the insurance. Independent insurance through Azumano on a Travelguard policy with a cancel for any reason clause will protect your vacation funds too.
Second - consider not traveling to the high risk areas during the peak storm season. There are plenty of sunny vacation spots in the world that are not in the hurricane zones.
Third - even though you may not be visiting a hurricane prone area, flights will be affected if airports close. Always check your flight status 24 and then 12 hours before flight time if your connection is through an airport that is in the storm path. There is travel insurance available on flight only purchases to protect canceled flights, missed connections and travel delays. Those can cost you money. Airlines are using the phrase "act of God" to avoid paying for hotels, meals and other expenses if you get stuck along the way.
Be prepared and travel smart. Ask your travel agent for advice - we have experience with the hurricane season!
