Money Abroad - a New Travel Scam

I like to share travel tips when I hear a good one or read an article that brings up a good point.
I just had clients return from Italy and they told me about "trick" that's being used to scam money. Scam really isn't the right word, but it's the best I can come up with to describe it. It's cab drivers who seem to be the most efficient scammers. When you pay the fare to the driver, the money is palmed for a smaller bill and the driver insists you didn't hand over the correct amount. When using foreign currency it's easy to get confused or do the math incorrectly, so the traveler simply hands over more cash. It can happen at restaurants, street vendors and other cash driven services.
My clients, after being "taken" twice, came up with a great solution. They marked the bills with a little check mark in the corner before paying anything. No more palming of bills occurred after that - the mark was visible and the recipients were observant. Plus my clients started to count the money bill by bill verbally as they handed it over.
No one likes to be scammed - so tuck this little trick into your brain for the next time you travel. It might save you a few bucks!
