Namibia - Cheetah Capital of the World

Benefiting the Cheetah Conservation Fund International Research and Education Center.

Azumano Travel American Express is honored to present a very special safari to Namibia, accompanied by Dr. Laurie Marker, Executive Director of the Cheetah Conservation Fund.   This unique opportunity to experience an African wildlife tour in the company of the world’s leading authority on cheetah’s and big cat conservation will certainly be the adventure of a lifetime.  The 12-day safari departs the United States on May 11, 2007 and is capped by a 3-day inside visit to Dr. Marker’s Cheetah Conservation Fund International Research and Education Centre. Dr. Marker will offer expert insight on CCF’s unique research and conservation programs along with introductions to some of her resident cheetahs. We invite you to join us for this rare glance into the incredible programs initiated by Dr. Marker to save the cheetah. A substantial contribution to CCF will be made possible through your participation in this one of a kind journey through one of the most unique parts of the African continent.

DAY 1 (May 12) JOHANNESBURG
Arrive in Johannesburg. AIRPORT GRAND

DAY 2  WINDHOEK, NAMIBIA
Arrive in Windhoek and overnight at local hotel.  Remainder of day and evening at rest. SAFARI COURT

DAY 3  FISH RIVER CANYON
From Windhoek, fly south to the Fish River Canyon, viewing the vast Kalahari Desert and the extinct Brukkaros Volcano. Arrive at your safari lodge and participate on canyon drive - approximately 3 hours. CANYON LODGE  (B,D) 

DAY 4  SOSSUSVLEI
A scenic flight over the steep and winding gorges of the Fish River Canyon to Sesriem, the gateway to the Namib Desert to view its magnificent sand dunes, the largest in the world. WOLWEDANS DUNE LODGE  (B,D)

DAY 5  SWAKOPMUND
Early morning balloon flight. Explore the Sossusvlei clay pan surrounded by the highest sand dunes in the world with its unique flora and fauna. There is also time to visit the sandstone gorges of the Sesriem Canyon. Low-level flight over dune desert to Atlantic Ocean and Swakopmund Airport. HANSA HOTEL  (B,D)

DAY 6  TWYFELFONTEIN
Transfer  to Walvis Bay, where you board a cruise boat to view Cape fur seals, dolphins and the aquatic bird species. Continue flying along the Skeleton Coast, Cape Cross, the Messum Crater and the many shipwrecks, to Twyfelfontein. TWYFELFONTEIN LODGE  (B)

DAY 7  ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK
In the morning, take part on a rock-engravings excursion. Afterwards, fly across the northern interior to the eastern border of the Etosha National Park arriving late afternoon at your lodge. MOKUTI LODGE  (B)

DAY 8  ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK
Enjoy a full day of game viewing in the Etosha National Park with an expert guide. MOKUTI LODGE  (B)

DAY 9  WATERBERG PLATEAU - CCF
Morning flight to the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) airstrip. Your Wildlife Safari representative will meet and transfer you to the Frans Indongo Lodge. The rest of the day at leisure. FRANS INDONGO LODGE  (B,D)

DAY 10  WATERBERG PLATEAU - CCF
After breakfast, drive through CCF’s  non-releasable cheetah area, (Bellebino Cheetah Area)  and CCF staff will introduce participants to the orphaned cheetahs. Afterwards, drive through the CCF game reserve to the CCF Education Center. Here you will meet the research staff and learn more about CCF’s programs. Afternoon game drive through CCF’s Little Serengeti. FRANS INDONGO LODGE  (B,L,D)

DAY 11  WATERBERG PLATEAU - CCF
Today you will have the opportunity to walk in the bush with the herd of goats and CCF’s Livestock Guarding Dogs. Drive to CCF’s Wilderness area and take a nature hike along the Waterberg Plateau. In the afternoon, participate  in a game drive and meet CCF’s giraffe. Early evening, drive in the Bellebino Cheetah Area for photos and enjoy a sundowner in the bush. FRANS INDONGO LODGE   (B,L,D)

DAY 12  WATERBERG PLATEAU - CCF
After breakfast, drive through the Bellebino Cheetah Area. Meet Cheewbaaka at his favorite play tree where you will walk in the bush with CCF’s ambassador cheetah. Picnic lunch in the bush. Return to CCF’s Research Education Center. Early evening, photograph CCF’s cheetahs exercising. Enjoy game drive on your way back to the hotel. FRANS INDONGO LODGE   (B,L,D)

DAY 13  (May 24)  DEPART FOR U.S.
Breakfast and morning transfer to Windhoek International Airport for your flight home.  (B)

Dr. Laurie Marker
The World’s Leading Authority on Cheetahs

Dr. Laurie Marker is Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) based in Namibia, Africa. Having worked with cheetahs since 1974, Dr. Marker set up the not-for profit Cheetah Conservation Fund in 1990, moving to Namibia to develop a permanent conservation research Centre for the wild cheetah. Dr. Marker has become an international spokesperson on behalf of cheetah conservation and works tirelessly to save these highly endangered big cats.  In 1992 the Cheetah Conservation Fund became a registered Namibian Trust. Today CCF's activities are housed at their International Research and Education Centre in the main cheetah habitat of Namibia, which has the largest and healthiest population of cheetahs left in the world.

Dr. Marker has received countless accolades and awards for her innovative and effective approach to predator conservation.  Her mission at CCF is to operate an internationally recognized center of excellence in research and education on cheetahs and their ecosystems, working with all stakeholders to achieve best practice in the conservation and management of the world’s cheetahs.  CCF leads the world in its efforts to save the fastest animal on earth.
